Most coolant problems announce themselves one of three ways. You see a wisp of steam curling from under the hood in a parking lot off Sunset Boulevard. You catch a sweet, syrupy smell that has no business being in a car. Or you back out of the driveway and there’s a small colored puddle where the front of the car sat.

All three mean the same thing in the broadest sense: the cooling system is losing coolant. None of them tell you where it’s going. That’s the actual question, and it’s the one that gets skipped when a driver buys a jug of antifreeze, tops off the reservoir, and hopes.

This post works the problem backward, the way a tech does: start with the symptom you noticed and follow it along the leak path to the component.

Why Topping It Off Is Not a Repair

A cooling system is sealed and pressurized. It doesn’t consume coolant the way an engine slowly consumes a little oil. The level moves up and down with temperature, but over months it should land back in the same place. So if you’re adding coolant, it’s going somewhere: onto the ground, into the air, or into somewhere inside the engine where it doesn’t belong.

Topping it off is worth doing to get yourself to the shop safely, but it isn’t a fix, and it resets the trend. Keep filling the bottle without writing anything down and nobody can tell whether the leak is stable or getting worse. Note the date and roughly how much you added. That’s real information for the tech who ends up with the car, and it belongs on the same short list of things South Carolina drivers should be checking themselves between visits.

Steam Under the Hood: Working Backward From the Cloud

Steam is coolant landing on something hot enough to flash it off, almost always the exhaust manifold or pipe. That narrows things down, because coolant falls. If it’s vaporizing on the exhaust, the leak is above the exhaust.

A steaming engine usually shows up with company: a temperature gauge climbing out of its normal band, a hot smell, and sometimes a warning light on the dash. Treat that combination as a stop-driving event, not a drive-it-home event. That holds on Highway 378 in Lexington and on I-26 toward Irmo alike.

One safety rule matters more than any diagnostic tip here. Do not open the radiator cap or the coolant reservoir on a hot engine. The system is pressurized on purpose. According to MACS, the Mobile Air Climate Systems Association, every pound per square inch of pressure raises the coolant’s boiling point by roughly 3 degrees Fahrenheit, standard caps run around 15 to 16 psi, and some modern vehicles use caps rated as high as 22 psi. Releasing the cap releases that pressure, and the coolant boils instantly, upward, at your face and hands. Let it cool.

That Sweet Smell, and Where It’s Coming From

Almost nothing else in a vehicle smells sweet, which makes your nose useful here. Where you smell it splits the diagnosis.

Sweet smell outside the car, strongest with the hood up. Coolant is escaping in the engine bay and evaporating off hot metal, so read it alongside the steam section above.

Sweet smell inside the cabin. This one points at the heater core, the small radiator buried behind your dashboard that heats the cabin. The Motorist Assurance Program lists the classic symptom set: a sweet antifreeze smell inside the car, a windshield that fogs or films over on the inside and won’t clear, coolant puddling or wet carpet on the passenger side floor, steady coolant loss, and weak or cold heat while the engine itself is running hot.

That damp passenger carpet is the tell people misread most often. In a Midlands summer, a wet floorboard is often just a clogged air conditioning drain dumping condensation inside the car instead of onto the pavement. AC condensate is clear and doesn’t smell like anything. Heater core coolant is colored, and it’s sweet. If your AC has also been blowing warm, those two systems share more of the dashboard than most drivers realize, and it’s worth having both looked at in one visit.

One More Reason Not to Let It Drip

A puddle of coolant on your driveway is a problem for the household as much as for the car. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that ethylene glycol antifreeze has a sweet taste that makes it palatable to animals, and that the minimum lethal dose of the undiluted product is roughly 4.4 to 6.6 mL per kilogram in dogs and about 1.4 mL per kilogram in cats. Merck adds that the prognosis varies inversely with the time between ingestion and treatment, so this is a same-hour emergency. If you have pets, or your neighbors do, clean the puddle up and get the leak found.

A Slow Drip: Reading the Puddle in Your Lexington Driveway

A drip that only shows up overnight is the friendliest version of this problem, because the car is leaving you a map. Note three things before you wipe it up.

  • Color. Coolant comes in green, orange, pink, blue and yellow depending on the chemistry the manufacturer specified. Any of those on the ground is coolant. Clear and odorless is AC condensation, and in a Lexington July that’s completely normal. Brown or black and slick is oil.
  • Position. Front and center, right behind the bumper, usually points at the radiator. Mid-engine on the belt side often points at the water pump. Wet toward the passenger footwell inside the car points at the heater core.
  • Timing. A puddle only after a long drive suggests something that has to get hot and pressurized before it opens up. One after the car sits cold suggests a gap wide enough to seep on its own.

The Usual Suspects, Front to Back

Nearly every coolant leak on a passenger vehicle comes from one of five places.

Upper and lower radiator hoses. These fail more often than anything else, and from the inside out, which is why a visual check isn’t enough. The hose, the coolant and the metal fittings at each end effectively form a small battery, and that electrochemical attack on the rubber creates micro-cracks in the inner wall. Coolant works into those cracks and weakens the reinforcement until you get a pinhole or a burst. The home check: squeeze the hose near the clamps, then in the middle. If the ends feel softer, the inside is going.

The water pump weep hole. Water pumps are built with a small hole that’s meant to leak. When the internal shaft seal starts to fail, coolant escapes there instead of reaching the bearing, which is the pump telling you it’s on the clock. Crust, staining or drips around that hole is a real finding, not a smudge to wipe away.

Radiator seams and plastic end tanks. Most modern radiators are an aluminum core crimped to plastic tanks with a gasket in the seam. Years of heat cycling make the plastic brittle and relax the crimp. Leaks show up along that seam, at the tank, or at a plastic fitting where a hose clamps on.
