Almost every article about motor oil argues about the same thing: how many miles you can go before the next change. That is a fair question, but it is not the one we get asked across the counter in Lexington. What people actually stand there and ask is simpler. Which one do I put in?

Full synthetic, synthetic blend, or conventional. A wall of bottles, three prices, four numbers on each label, and a sticker on your windshield that may or may not be telling the truth. This post is about that decision, not the interval. By the end you should be able to look at your own vehicle and know what belongs in it, and why.

Full synthetic vs conventional oil: what actually differs

The three grades on the shelf are not a good-better-best sales ladder invented by the marketing department. They differ in two real ways: the base oil they start from, and the additive package mixed into it.

Conventional oil starts from refined crude. Full synthetic starts from base stocks built to a much tighter, more uniform molecular structure, then carries a more robust additive package. Synthetic blend sits in between, and according to AAA a blend may use a high-quality conventional oil as its base, which is why it offers less protection than a full synthetic rather than matching it.

What does “more protection” actually mean, though? AAA put that question to the test, running 5W-20 synthetics from five major brands against their conventional equivalents across eight ASTM industry-standard tests. The synthetics performed an average of 47 percent better. The tests measured concrete properties, not vibes:

  • Shear stability – whether the oil keeps its thickness under load instead of thinning out
  • Deposit formation – how much varnish and gunk it leaves behind on hot parts
  • Volatility – how much of it boils off and disappears at high temperature
  • Cold-temperature pumpability – whether it can reach the top of the engine on a cold start
  • Oxidation resistance – how long it takes heat and air to chemically break the oil down
  • Oxidation-induced thickening – whether the oil turns to sludge as it ages

That is the honest version of the difference. Not “premium,” just measurably slower to break down.

Worth knowing that most drivers are not convinced. In the same AAA research, 44 percent of drivers surveyed were either unsure (27 percent) or flatly did not believe (17 percent) that synthetic protects an engine better. If you have been quietly skeptical that the upsell was real, you are in the majority, and the lab testing does not support the skepticism.

How to read the viscosity grade on the bottle

The big number on the front, something like 5W-30 or 0W-20, is the part most people skim past. It is actually two ratings stacked together.

The number before the W (which stands for winter) describes how easily the oil flows when the engine is cold and you first turn the key. Lower is thinner when cold, which means it gets up to the valvetrain faster on that first crank.

The number after the dash describes how the oil holds up once the engine is at full operating temperature, hot and working.

Here is the part worth underlining: that grade is a specification, not a quality score. A 30 is not stronger than a 20. It is thicker at operating temperature, which is the correct answer for engines designed around a 30 and the wrong answer for engines designed around a 20. Nobody at the factory picked those numbers casually.

So when someone asks us which motor oil for my car is the “best” one, the real answer is not a brand. It is whichever oil matches two things at once: the grade the engine was engineered for, and the performance standard that engine’s manufacturer requires.

The spec code matters as much as the number

Flip the bottle around. On the back you will find the API “donut,” and often a starburst symbol on the front. Those marks are the second half of the answer, and they are the half almost nobody reads.

The donut carries the API service category. API introduced SP in May 2020, and it was written to address specific modern failure modes: protection against low-speed pre-ignition, timing chain wear, plus better deposit protection and sludge control. API currently lists SP, SN, SM, SL and SJ as active categories, with SN covering 2020-and-older engines, SM 2010-and-older, SL 2004-and-older and SJ 2001-and-older. Older categories, SH, SG, SF and on down to SA, are obsolete and carry cautions about use in modern engines.

The starburst covers the ILSAC standard. The current one, GF-7, became effective March 31, 2025. GF-7A applies to 0W-20, 5W-20, 0W-30, 5W-30 and 10W-30; GF-7B applies only to 0W-16. Each new standard is backward compatible with the generation before it, so a newer certification is not a problem for an older engine.

Then there are manufacturer specs on top of the industry ones. GM’s dexos1 Gen 3 is the one we see most often on trucks and SUVs around here. GM announced it in November 2021, replacing dexos1 Gen 2 which had been in use since 2015, and it tightened requirements for oxidation resistance, sludge control, piston cleanliness and turbocharger protection. Oils meeting Gen 3 are backward compatible with vehicles that call for Gen 2.

This is where a good-faith purchase can still go wrong. A bottle can say full synthetic 5W-30 in big letters on the front and still not carry the dexos license number your truck’s manual requires. Same grade, same word “synthetic,” different thing. The license number is printed on the back, and if it is not there, the oil was never run through that manufacturer’s approval testing.

One more label detail from the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA: their guidance suggests looking for oil that displays “Energy Conserving” on the API performance symbol, because those formulations contain friction-reducing additives.

Why Midlands stop-and-go driving is harder on oil than highway miles

Here is the thing that surprises people. The car with 6,000 easy local miles on it may be working its oil harder than the one that just ran to Charlotte and back twice.

Highway miles are gentle on oil. The engine comes up to full operating temperature, stays there, and runs at a steady load. Short local trips are the opposite, and short local trips are what most of us actually drive.

Picture the run down Sunset Boulevard or US-378 from Lexington toward downtown Columbia in July. A handful of miles. Several lights. A/C on maximum the whole way. The engine barely settles at operating temperature before you shut it off in a parking deck. Or the twice-a-day school run to Lexington One schools and back: two cold starts each trip, no sustained highway running at all, and an odometer that makes it look like the car has hardly been driven.

What that pattern does to oil:

  • The engine may never fully warm up. Moisture and small amounts of fuel that slip past the piston rings normally cook off once the oil is hot. On short trips they stay in the pan and dilute the oil.
  • More cold starts per mile. Cold start is when the most wear happens, because the oil has drained down and has to be pumped back up. Short-trip driving stacks up far more of those events per thousand miles.
  • Heat with no airflow. Columbia has a humid subtropical climate with a NOAA mean daily maximum around 92.7 degrees in July, and frequently posts some of the highest summer temperatures in the state. Sitting in traffic with the A/C compressor loaded is heat soak with none of the cooling airflow highway speed provides.
  • Auto stop-start cycling. Newer vehicles shut the engine off at every light, which multiplies restarts on exactly the kind of trip already described. We covered that system in detail in Does Auto Stop-Start Damage Your Engine?

Now look back at AAA’s findings on where synthetic earns its keep. The list they identified was newer vehicles with turbocharged engines, vehicles driven in stop-and-go traffic, heavy towing, and extreme hot or cold climates. Three of those four describe ordinary Midlands commuting in August.

That is not a reason to override your manual. It is a reason that, when your manual permits either, the synthetic is usually the one we would put in your engine here.

What happens when the grade is wrong

The old instinct was that a tired engine wants thicker oil. On a modern engine, that instinct can cause the problem it is trying to prevent.

  • Variable valve timing gets confused. VVT phasers are hydraulic devices sized around a specific oil thickness. Feed them something heavier than the design spec and they respond slowly or not at all, which can set timing-related fault codes on a mechanically healthy engine.
  • Turbochargers can be starved. A turbo bearing spins at extreme speed on a thin film of oil delivered through small passages. Heavier oil is slower to arrive, and the moment right after startup is when it is needed most.
  • Cold-start flow suffers. Going the wrong direction on the W number means the oil is slower to reach the top of the engine on that first crank, which is the wear event you were trying to avoid.
  • Fuel economy measurably drops. The Department of Energy and EPA put a number on this: using the manufacturer’s recommended grade improves gas mileage by 1 to 2 percent, and running 10W-30 in an engine designed for 5W-30 lowers gas mileage by that same 1 to 2 percent.
  • Warranty coverage gets shaky. AAA is blunt about it. The manufacturer’s recommendation is the most important factor in the decision, and violating it can damage the engine and even void the warranty.

On a late-model turbocharged four-cylinder there is one more consideration. Low-speed pre-ignition, the abrupt and destructive combustion event that API SP was specifically written to guard against, is influenced by oil formulation. Wrong or worn-out oil in that kind of engine is not a minor deviation. Why the manual beats the sticker on your windshield

That little sticker in the upper corner of your windshield tells you what a shop poured in and roughly when. Useful. But it is a record of a past decision, not a specification.

We see the drift regularly. A sticker reads 5W-20 conventional because that is what a quick-lube had in the bulk tank two years ago, while the owner’s manual for that vehicle specifies 0W-20 meeting a current API and ILSAC standard. Nobody was being dishonest. The wrong answer just got copied forward at every visit after that.

The owner’s manual, or the manufacturer’s current service information, is the actual source of truth. It states the grade, the required performance standard, and the capacity. And that answer can be revised after your car was built, since manufacturers do issue updated specifications and service bulletins. How a technician confirms the right oil for your specific vehicle

When you bring a vehicle in for an oil change in Lexington SC, “what does it take” is not a guess based on the year and model. Two trucks with the same badge on the tailgate can call for different oil depending on which engine is under the hood. Here is what actually gets checked:

  • The VIN gets decoded to the exact engine, build date and options, since that is what determines the specification.
  • Current manufacturer service data gets pulled, including any superseding spec or bulletin issued after the vehicle was sold.
  • Certification is verified on the bottle, meaning the API category, the ILSAC standard, and any manufacturer license such as dexos where required.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch to full synthetic on a high-mileage engine?
Generally yes, provided the grade and specification still match what the manufacturer requires. The old story about synthetic causing leaks in older engines is not a reason to run an oil your engine was not designed for. If the engine already has a leak, that leak is the thing to address.

Is a synthetic blend good enough?
It is better than conventional and not equal to full synthetic. AAA’s position is that a blend may be built on a conventional base and provides less protection than a full synthetic. If your manual permits a blend and your driving is genuinely light, it is a legitimate choice. For heavy stop-and-go duty in Midlands heat, full synthetic is the stronger option.

Does synthetic mean I can go longer between changes?

What if my manual lists two acceptable grades?

Yes. A hybrid has a gasoline engine that starts and stops constantly and often runs in short bursts, which is demanding duty for oil. Fully electric vehicles have no engine oil, though they still need other fluids and services checked.
